Okama Crater [Zao, Miyagi]

Okama is a spot on Mt. Goshiki, one of the volcanoes in the Zao Mountain Range.

It is a crater lake formed by the accumulation of water in a crater created by an eruption about 1,000 to 2,000 years ago. It is also called “Goshiki-numa” (multicolored pond).

As the name suggests, the color of the lake water changes from emerald green to lapis lazuli depending on the weather, offering a different view every time you visit.

Highlights

  • The color of the mysterious emerald green lake changes depending on how the sunlight enters
  • There are many kinds of alpine plants growing wild in the vicinity, such as Dicentra, Dactylorhiza aristata, and Gentian
  • From the parking lot on the Zao Echo Line, there is a barrier-free access to the observatory, making it easy to visit during the summer season
