Kappa Bridge [Kamikochi, Nagano]

Kappa Bridge is a bridge located in Kamikochi, Nagano.

It is a suspension bridge spanning the Azusa River in Kamikochi, one of the most popular mountain resorts in Japan. The current bridge is the fifth generation, having been replaced in 1997.

Ryunosuke Akutagawa, one of Japan’s most famous writers, praised the Kappa Bridge in his writings. Indeed, it is a spot that has been loved by many for a long time.

The view of the Hotaka Mountain Range and its ponds and streams offer beautiful scenes of nature at its most magnificent. From fresh green to autumn leaves, you are sure to enjoy the ever-changing scenery of the mountainous regions of Japan.

Access

Take a train for Matsumoto(松本) Station from Sinjuku(新宿) Station on the Limited Express Azusa, and then transfer to the The Kamikochi Line bound for Shin-Shimashima(新島々) Station. It takes a total 3 hour and 10 minutes. From Shin-shimashima Station, take the local bus or taxi for Kamikochi takes about an hour.

There are restrictions on entry by private vehicles throughout the year. It is necessary to transfer to a bus or cab at each parking lot.

From Tokyo Haneda Airport, take a rental car via the Chuo and Nagano Expressways, and drive about 3 hours to the Matsumoto(松本) Interchange.
From the Matsumoto Interchange, it is about 40 minutes to the Sawando(沢渡) parking lot.
There are four toll parking lots in the Sawando area.
From each parking lot, take a shuttle bus or cab to Kamikochi.

From Nagoya Chubu International (中部国際) Airport, take a rental car via Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway and get off at Takayama(高山) Interchange (about 3 hours and 40 minutes).
It takes about 3 hours and 40 minutes from the Takayama Interchange to the Hirayu Akandana (平湯あかんだな) Parking Lot.
There are three toll parking lots around Hirayu and Akandana.
From each parking lot, take a shuttle bus or cab to Kamikochi.

Hours/ClosedNakanoyu Gate (中の湯ゲート), the entrance to Kamikochi, is closed at night. Traffic hours at the Nakanoyu Gate: until 19:00 during spring and autumn, until 20:00 during July and August only.
